A funding crunch is forcing the World Food Programme to scale back food assistance in Yemen, reducing the rations of 8 million people to barely half the daily food minimum basket that is standard for the organization. This comes at the worst possible time for the 13 million people in the country who depend on WFP’s food assistance to survive.

The EU’s contribution for 2021, made through the European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (ECHO), helped UNHAS to support a regional approach to its services, enabling over 60,000 aid workers reach 66 remote locations in Mauritania, Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, and Niger throughout the year at a time when humanitarian needs worsened.

The contribution will sustain and increase access to education through the provision of nutritious school meals for 13,000 children.

An important element of the partnership is training, and helping strengthen the skills and expertise of KRSO staff in food security monitoring. Building on WFP’s successful skills workshops with KRSO in the past, the agreement includes comprehensive training on food security and data analysis, including Kurdistan Region government staff from other departments.

This marks a new phase of the programme where the Ministry of Education begins to directly take over the implementation of the programme and provision of the school meals.

The centre, designed by internationally renowned architect Marina Tabassum, uses an innovative bamboo structure and integrates sustainable design elements, including passive cooling, energy efficient design and the use of renewable materials.

Back in 2011, I had a middle-of-the-night flash of inspiration.
