The contributions will help support up to 300,000 people through 2022. The first grant of JPY400 million (approximately US$3 million) will be used to procure 1,500 metric tons of rice that will assist 41,500 people facing severe food insecurity.

The contribution from Japan will enable WFP provide school feeding and nutrition support to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and host communities.

 “We are grateful for this continued and timely assistance from the United States,” said Sarah Gordon-Gibson, WFP Country Director and Representative.

Since the conflict broke out last year, hunger and acute malnutrition have soared.

Four years ago, the village of Duduwa, in the district of Banke in the south of Nepal, was hit by heavy monsoon rains. Crops were destroyed. Food insecurity in one of the world’s poorest countries got worse. In December I visited the flood-affected communes in one of the worst-hit areas to meet two families affected supported by the World Food Programme (WFP).

In decades past on the plains of Adadle district, in Ethiopia’s Somali Region, grass used to grow so tall that lions could hide in it, people say. Not anymore.  Over the past four months, community hubs in the district have been deserted; more than 80 households have left their homes in search of water. That is what Hana has done and it’s not her first such migration.

Following a massive scale-up of operations, WFP has provided 330,000 loaves of freshly baked bread to families in the city of Kharkiv, cash assistance to displaced people in Lviv and ready-to-eat food in various parts of the country; WFP emergency food supplies have also made it to the conflict areas of Sumy and Kharkiv through two interagency humanitarian convoys.

The visit took place at ‘El Boghdadi’ village, one of the 123 communities supported under the rural development programme run by WFP and the Government. The delegation toured consolidated land plants and learned about improved agro-processing and irrigation techniques.

The reductions come at the worst possible time for families in Yemen who are dependent on WFP’s food assistance to survive. In the last three months, inadequate food consumption – one measure of hunger tracked by WFP – has risen rapidly to affect half of all families as currency devaluation and hyper-inflation drives the economy to near collapse.
