With the markets inside Gaza now all but collapsed, many are now going days without eating, meaning WFP and partners on the ground are seeing an increasing risk of starvation.

"This memorandum further strengthens our partnership with the Ministry as we work on supporting the consolidation of social assistance systems in the country,” said WFP Country Director and Representative in Lebanon Abdallah Alwardat.

The programme has already started in Kharkivska oblast, and will later expand to Mykolaivska and Khersonska oblasts, focusing on farmers with land plots smaller than 300 hectares as well as rural families growing food for their own consumption. The convoy, which moved through the Rafah crossing Saturday brought with it three trucks carrying 60 metric tons of WFP emergency food. The supplies include canned tuna, wheat flour, pasta, canned beans and canned tomato paste. “This food is desperately needed as the conditions inside Gaza are truly catastrophic.

Dom Scalpelli, WFP’s Country Director in Bangladesh, said; “our collaboration with BBS has been pivotal in generating crucial data over the years. We have jointly produced poverty and undernutrition maps and have been involved in policy research, like the Urban Socioeconomic Assessment Survey 2019 and the Vulnerable Group Development Survey.

But the threat is not only a future concern,  the results are being felt now, according to the ‘Asia and the Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 – Urban Food Systems and Nutrition’.

The situation in northern Gaza is deteriorating even further. Virtually the entire area is under evacuation orders, with thousands of families forced to flee amid intense airstrikes and military operations.

The escalation of military activity in Rafah, southern Gaza, has displaced hundreds of thousands of people, making life even harder for thousands of families who have already been displaced several times
