As of Wednesday morning, WFP had reached nearly 64,000 people in urgent need of food assistance, providing ready-to-eat food rations, family food packages and hot meals.

The cyclone hit the southern African country just as the rainy season was tailing off with several rivers and water bodies already at high levels resulting in severe flooding.  This has inundated farmlands and destroyed produce – just as farmers were about to harvest the only crop of the year - compounding an already difficult year in which 3.8 million people need food assistance.

Thanks to a financial contribution from the European Union’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations department (ECHO), and in partnership with the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC), WFP has begun distributing cash to help affected people purchase food.
