This report highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the food security of the affected population and the effect of the Philippine Government’s Social Amelioration Programme on its beneficiaries.

As we mark World Food Day on 16 October, we take note of the fact that more than 800 million people – one in nine people globally - are facing chronic hunger, unable to meet their basic food requirements not just today but day after day in their lives. For the most part, the causes of hunger remain the same – conflict, the climate crisis and economic marginalization.

The Republic of Congo is a resource-rich, middle-income country that has the potential to end hunger by 2030.  A third of the population are food insecure, however, with recurring conflict and regional insecurity increasing levels of displacement. 

Since mid- August 2020, Rakhine State has seen an increase in local transmission of COVID-19, concentrated around the state capital Sittwe. Nutrient-adequate diets cost three times more than diets that meet only energy needs. In 2020, almost all households in the Kyrgyz Republic were able to afford a diet that meets energy needs, but at least 2 in 5 households (38 percent) were unable to afford a nutritious diet. Poor diets contribute to all forms of malnutrition in the Kyrgyz Republic.
