The World Food Programme wasted no time in responding when, on 14 August, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti’s southern peninsula, killing more than 2,200 people, leaving up to 12,000 injured.  Many were displaced as homes, land and the already vulnerable country’s infrastructure were destroyed.

Some 5.7 million people have been displaced internally in the DRC (the highest in Africa). Of these, some 1.5 million people were displaced in 2022 alone.

The donation was formalised at a ceremony held yesterday at the Department of Foreign Affairs office in Pasay City, Manila, at which the Exchange of Notes were signed by Koshikawa Kazuhiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines and Brenda Barton, WFP Representative and Country Director. From January to September 2020, WFP reached 6.7 million food insecure girls, boys, women and men across the country with food assistance. This included 4.5 million seasonally food insecure people, more than 290,000 people affected by the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 more than 200,00 returnees and refugees.
