Corinne Fleischer describes Gaza as “a terrible situation getting worse.” Over the past two weeks, 21 World Food Programme (WFP) food distribution points have been closed under evacuation orders.

With this contribution, WFP will provide daily hot and nutritious meals made from Japanese rice along with fresh vegetables that will be locally procured from smallholder farmers.

The contribution will enable WFP to empower local smallholder farmers, particularly women and the youth, by promoting climate-resilient and sustainable farming practices, such as using drought-resistant crops and efficient irrigation methods.  WFP will also enhance post-harvest management and improve storage techniques to reduce crop losses.

SDC’s support complements the cash transfers that WFP is already delivering to the most vulnerable, food insecure urban Zimbabweans with activities which build their resilience to cope with various shocks and stressors, which can devastate their food security.

In many countries school meals represent a significant portion of children’s daily diets, and it is vital that these directly contribute to their nutrition needs.

Most of the people that WFP and its partners reached in those areas had not received humanitarian assistance since April, despite multiple attempts by WFP and other UN agencies to secure access.

The cyclone brought torrential rains and flash floods - the worst in 40 years, with Dili, the capital, hardest hit. Following the disaster, the Government declared a State of Calamity and called for international assistance. “With logistics support from WFP, we have been able to distribute life-saving relief materials to families affected by the floods within 48 hours.
