Her proactive response to emergencies, notably in raising crucial funds during crises, has been truly inspiring.
While the food assistance has been designed to meet the minimum recommended 2,100 kilocalories, chronic funding shortfalls have forced WFP to provide reduced rations since 2020. Earlier this year (March), further reductions were made, dropping the ration from meeting 80 percent of the food needs to 65 percent.
During the visit, he will discuss how food security and nutrition can be addressed through shared investments in agriculture and water management, nutrition-sensitive value chains and human capital development. Despite efforts to make resources stretch through prioritisation schemes, meaning food assistance is prioritised for the most vulnerable families, the sheer number of refugees in need of support has grown, along with the gap between resourcing and needs.
The contributions will help support up to 300,000 people through 2022. The first grant of JPY400 million (approximately US$3 million) will be used to procure 1,500 metric tons of rice that will assist 41,500 people facing severe food insecurity.
