This contribution comes at a critical time when thousands of women, men and children in Mali face catastrophic levels of food insecurity while more than a million will struggle to feed themselves during the June- August lean season.

The number of people WFP will target as part of the programme could expand to 12 million people if adequate funding allows. But dwindling resources  available for humanitarian operations means that despite near-record level needs, WFP has been forced to assist less people than originally planned.

From April to June 2023 rainfall conditions varied geographically across Indonesia. The Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported that approximately 60 of the regions in Indonesia entered dry season as of June 2023 and meteorological drought was noticed in Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara.

A total of 900 metric tonnes of rice will be distributed to 100,000 people (18,000 families) in 16 districts of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Sekong and Salavanh Provinces. “The food inflation rate has experienced a significant surge recently, with a 47 percent increase, the highest level since March 2000.

The MoU was signed by UN Women Lebanon’s Representative, Gielan Elmessiri, and WFP Lebanon’s Representative and Country Director, Abdallah Alwardat.   This collaboration involves conducting regular research to evaluate gender equality and social inclusion aspects in assistance programmes.

This is the culmination of a complete evaluation and reset of WFP operations in Ethiopia focused on transparency, evidence, and operational independence. WFP’s new approach is underpinned by a robust set of safeguards and controls that have been extensively tested.

The trend is particularly worrying in coastal countries, where the number of women, men, and children facing acute hunger (IPC/CH phases 3 or higher) is expected to reach 6.2 million during the June-August 2024 hunger gap - a 16 percent increase on last year.

The evaluation was conducted between January 2021 and March 2022.

With the onset of the lean season, coping strategies worsened and were reported the worst in the South East and in Bong County. Food prices remained relatively stable while wage rates and terms of trade rose, especially in Bong County.
