South Sudan is simultaneously drowning and drying as the climate crisis tightens its grip. An unprecedented flooding crisis has swallowed large swathes of the country while other parts are grappling with devastating drought. More than 7 million people are food insecure, and 1.65 million children are malnourished.

The funding will help more than 35,000 children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers impacted by conflict, economic shocks, and climate events.

 The World Food Programme (WFP) is working around the clock to deliver food assistance to communities across Sudan facing acute hunger. WFP’s priority is providing vital aid across 14 areas in the country to people who have been left either in famine or at risk of slipping into famine after 500 days of relentless conflict.

In Sudan, areas of agricultural land have turned into battlegrounds, while farms and businesses stand abandoned as people have fled for safety. There are huge cash shortages nationwide, and repeated cuts to communication channels hinder efforts to keep commerce going.

The report found that many hotspots face growing hunger crises and highlights the worrying multiplier effect that simultaneous and overlapping shocks are having on acute food insecurity. Conflict, climate extremes, and economic shocks continue to drive vulnerable households into food crises.
