This comes as aid agencies scramble to respond to a fresh wave of refugees fleeing an unimaginable humanitarian crisis unfolding in neighbouring Darfur amid reports of mass killings, rapes, and widespread destruction. In just the last six months of conflict in Sudan, as many refugees have fled into Chad as had crossed the border in the preceding 20 years starting from the outbreak of the Darfur

Chad is host to more than one million refugees - one of the largest and fastest-growing refugee populations in Africa. The recent conflict in neighbouring Sudan has driven hundreds of thousands more across the border. Despite humanitarian needs spiralling, resources available to respond are dwindling leaving aid groups with few options.

The health system continues to be systematically degraded, with catastrophic consequences. As of 19 February, only 12 out of 36 hospitals with inpatient capacity are still functioning, and only partially. There have been more than 370 attacks on health care in Gaza since 7 October.  Diseases are rampant. Famine is looming. Water is at a trickle.

"There are some families that go to bed some days without one meal — people are struggling simply because even basic medicines are not available," says Eddie Rowe, World Food Programme (WFP) country representative and director for Zimbabwe. Power cuts The country is suffering its worst hunger crisis in more than a decade. "Prices of basic commodities are skyrocketing," he says.

However, we must not prevent an entire organization from delivering on its mandate to serve people in desperate need.  The harrowing events that have been snowballing in Gaza since 7 October have left hundreds of thousands of people homeless and on the brink of famine.

“We are deeply saddened by the killing of this humanitarian worker,” said Chris Nikoi, WFP Regional Director for West Africa. “It is unacceptable that humanitarians working tirelessly to alleviate suffering in these difficult and unprecedented times should be targeted.

The operating environment in Sudan is without a doubt the most challenging that I have experienced in my 30-year career as an aid worker. What I have personally witnessed since conflict erupted across the country on 15 April and the stories I hear – especially from the Darfur region – are harrowing.
