Full title: Provision Of Life-saving Shelter And Food Assistance In Support Of Cyclone And Flood Affected Communities In Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique

Tropical Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique on 25 April with strong winds impacting several coastal areas. As of 28 April, 5 deaths and 11 injured have been reported, and 23,760 people have reportedly been displaced and are living in accommodation centers, according to the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC). At least 35,110 houses have been totally destroyed (3,805) or partially destroyed (31,305). The government reported that thousands of hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed, nearing and at harvest time, which will affect the food security in months to come.

In responding to the impact of the floods and the urgent needs identified, IOM and WFP will seek to ensure affected populations in Cabo Delgado have access to lifesaving shelter and food assistance. An estimated 25,235 individuals will be reached under this action. In line with government priorities and request for assistance, the intervention will focus on the districts Macomia, Quissangua and Ibo, which have been severely impacted. Further government rapid assessments are underway, and geographical and beneficiary targeting might be adjusted as soon as more data becomes available.

IOM will distribute Emergency Shelter Kits targeting the most vulnerable households of the affected population. IOM expects to reach 4,300 households with Emergency Shelter Assistance. WFP will implement as co-delegatee of IOM under this action. WFP, in collaboration with the authorities and food security cluster partners, will provide life-saving food assistance to populations in need. While the majority of life-saving food assistance will be provided through in-kind food assistance, in areas where markets will be proven to be functional and retailers will have sufficient capacity, WFP will make use of commodity vouchers to deliver food assistance. An estimated 5,047 households will be reached with food assistance.
