This grant comes as part of Japan’s Emergency Grant Aid and brings its total contribution to WFP operations in Palestine since the onset of the Gaza crisis to US$21.3 million.
“We believe this contribution will meet people’s pressing food needs in Gaza, especially women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
The programme, closely coordinated with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, was launched in 2016 to boost students’ health, learning and access to education.
The academy is endorsed by Jean Todt, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety.
"I salute WFP for the launch of the WFP Road Safety Academy. I am looking forward for the first results of this inspiring initiative which can play a pivotal role in advancing the UN's mission for safer road practices and behaviours,” said Todt.
Contributing to SDG 5 on gender equality and the empowerment of women, and working with communities, partners and Governments, WFP adopted a gender transformative approach in its programming. These included intentionally targeted women to strengthen their resilience, nutrition and food security.
The aircraft was carrying humanitarian cargo from Bor. The two crew members on board suffered injuries. They were treated at a local clinic and are in a stable condition.
The accident was followed by a fire that spread to huts adjacent to the airstrip. Three people died on the ground and two others were injured.

The Beryl Cash Assistance Programme targets 11,500 people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Beryl in early July. The programme will provide relief and support to families in their recovery, ensuring access to food, water and other essential needs.
The funds will support up to 327,000 displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees living in camps, with lifesaving assistance in the form of cash distributions and food baskets.
“With the unprecedented levels of global food-insecurity we see today, WFP’s efforts to fight hunger are more crucial than ever,” said Jonas Lovén, Sweden’s ambassador to Iraq.
