Most countries in West and Central Africa are distinguishable by high levels of poverty, exacerbated by a range of risks – drought, floods, conflict, and displacement to name a few. Many are disproportionately affected by climate change, which deepens underlying vulnerabilities and worsens the inextricable linkages between poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition.
In light of the swift depreciation of the Lebanese pound and the increase of pressure on redemption channels, WFP and UNHCR reintroduced dual currency disbursement for Syrian refugees benefiting from cash assistance programmes in May 2023.
The re-establishment of dual currency redemption for assistance to refugees in May 2023 resulted in significant improvements in terms of ATM functionality, crowding, and waiting time. This in turn led to a substantial rise in the overall amount of assistance.
