Geneva - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), stands ready to provide assistance to Tonga following the eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha-apai underwater volcano in the Pacific on 15 January.
On Yemen:
“Just two days ago, I was in Yemen, where over 16 million people now face crisis levels of hunger or worse. These aren’t just numbers. These are real people. And we are headed straight toward the biggest famine in modern history. It is hell on earth in many places in Yemen right now.”
“Around 400,000 children may die in Yemen this year without urgent intervention.
With a generous contribution from Canada, of 10 million Canadian dollars, WFP started this project to support access to education for Egyptians and Syrians alike.
Over the years, Pakistan has become a food surplus country and a major producer of wheat which it distributes to needy populations through various mechanisms, including the World Food Programme (WFP).
The funds will allow WFP to provide lifesaving food and nutrition assistance to nearly 370,400 affected people who are Internally Displaced Persons (IDP)’s and host families, pregnant or breastfeeding women, children and rural households experiencing food insecurity.
“This latest support from the UK is helping WFP to reach more than two million food-insecure people across Afghanistan through the harsh winter,” said UK Minister of State for Middle East, South Asia and the UN Lord (Tariq) Ahmad.
The grant agreement is signed today between H.E MIKAMI Masahiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and Ms. Claire CONAN, WFP Representative and Country Director, presided over and witnessed by H.E.
