Across the Horn of Africa – in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia – 22 million people currently face a severe hunger crisis after four consecutive failed rainy seasons.
Alarmingly, this figure is expected to increase, with a fifth poor rainy season forecast by the end of the year.

During his visit, Shiau met with communities from Mullaitivu in the North of Sri Lanka, who are among those worst affected by the economic crisis – including pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and people with disabilities – to better understand their nutritional needs.

Each family will receive a food basket – valued at LKR 15,000 (approximately EUR 40) and consisting of eggs, rice, fresh milk, red lentils and other protein-rich pulses – every fortnight over a period of one year.

The shipment of 23,000 metric tons of wheat grain will go to WFP’s humanitarian response in the Horn of Africa where the threat of famine stalks the drought-hit region.
After having struggled through a year of unprecedented economic hardship and environmental disasters like drought, earthquakes and flooding, the already dire situation for many Afghan families is expected to further deteriorate in the coming months.
The number of people pushed into hunger because of drought in the Horn of Africa could rise from the current 14 million to 20 million by the end of the year, the World Food Programme has warned.
