Malawi is approaching the peak of the lean season and food insecurity is expected to worsen from now up to March. The contribution from France will be used to provide daily school meals to 18,000 school children across 17 primary schools and a market for approximately 600 local smallholder farmers who will supply fresh food to the schools.
GENEVA – The United Nations World Food Programme’s (WFP) fears about record levels of hunger in Sudan have been confirmed. Shortly after the conflict broke out in April, WFP forecast that hunger would rise to engulf more than 19 million people in the coming months.
“Amid already worrying levels of hunger and malnutrition, we are obliged to choose between the hungry and the starving, leaving millions of families scrambling for their next meal,” said Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Afghanistan.
In Cameroon, where conflict and displacement have led to a significant deterioration in food security, WFP will use a contribution of USD $1.4 million (JPY 200 million, 840 million XAF) to implement a two-year project, lasting until September 2025.
