Algeria has hosted refugees from disputed Western Sahara territory since 1975, in one of the world’s most protracted refugee crises. The Sahrawi refugees live in five camps near the town of Tindouf in Western Algeria, characterized by extreme heat and very low rainfall.

The evaluation covered all processes and activities related to the McGovern-Dole project from its start-up in 2018 to the time of data collection in March 2023. The refugees, who are mainly from the Great Lakes region, receive monthly WFP cash assistance at the camp - where they face several challenges, including insufficient shelter and inadequate health, water, and sanitation services. The assistance provided was designed to meet the minimum recommended energy needs of 2,100 kilocalories.
