Kadidja Abakar is haunted by the people she left behind, after fleeing her home in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region.   “We saw dead bodies along the way,” recalls the mother of six. “The wounded lay in their blood, crying for help. But there was nobody to assist them.”  Today, Abakar and her children are safe, after having crossed into eastern Chad last July.

“This is a race against time – I am worried we might not be able to keep up,” says Shelley Thakral, the World Food Programme’s communications chief in Afghanistan, on a video call from Herat. “We do not have enough funds and we are asking for US$2.6 billion to scale up as we must in 2022 – that’s about 30 cents of a US dollar per person we need to reach per day.

In 2022, a pilot project in Lesotho introduced energy-efficient Electric Pressure Cookers (EPCs) in five schools. The project aimed to assess the feasibility of using EPCs in schools and found that they were compatible with existing power infrastructure, saved money on cooking costs, and reduced food waste. The project also found that EPCs were faster and safer than other cooking options.
