Escalating violence has led to mass displacements within Lebanon, requiring WFP to scale up its emergency food assistance to reach up to one million people. WFP was well prepared and is already providing hot meals, ready-to-eat rations, food parcels and cash assistance daily to nearly 160,000 people in shelters.

WFP reached a record 12.4 million food-insecure people with food assistance in August. Yemen is a deeply complex and volatile operating environment. Despite the many challenges, WFP continues to expand its assistance across the country to prevent a further deterioration in the precarious food insecurity situation. Yemen remains the largest food security crisis in the world.

Highlights ​​Since November 2014, WFP has provided food assistance in Libya to assist over 236,000 beneficiaries. ​With WFP's support, REACH and third-party monitor JMW Consulting prepared a June-July Multi-Sector Needs Assessment  (MSNA), in collaboration with OCHA, UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, UNDP and UNFPA, which was released in September.

In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis, WFP is planning, from May to July, to provide emergency food assistance to 2.5 million conflict-affected people throughout the country. WFP and its local partners are facing major challenges distributing food assistance given the intensity of fighting and ongoing airstrikes.

As part of the visit, Wilcock travelled to Rathnapura, where she spoke with food-insecure families faced with high food prices and unemployment.

The pungent smell of boiling beans and burning ugali (maize meal) wafting through the corridors is one I can recall from my days growing up in a government boarding school in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s capital.  At times, the smell would change to boiling cabbage and burning rice.

Under the prevalent conditions, proposals to unilaterally create “safe zones” in Gaza risk creating harm for civilians, including large-scale loss of life, and must be rejected. Without the right conditions, concentrating civilians in such zones in the context of active hostilities can raise the risk of attack and additional harm.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent warning that 45 million people are teetering on the very edge of famine in 43 countries, with the slightest shock likely to push them over the precipice. Globally, up to 811 million people are chronically hungry, with 283 million acutely food insecure. Against this backdrop, WFP is aiming to target 140 million people in 2021.
