The Port is the heart of WFP’s operations in the region with over 200,000 mt of food destined for nine countries passing through each year.  The Deputy President and the ambassadors viewed a WFP-chartered vessel, MV Valsamitis, which is discharging 25,000 mt of wheat bought from Ukrainian farmers.

WFP in collaboration with the Government and the UN Agency for Refugees has also started shifting from providing refugees with homogeneous support to a ‘needs-based’ approach. In this approach, WFP will provide food assistance based on the food security and socio-economic status of each family.

Jamilla Hassan’s family once lived off rich farmland in the Lower Juba region of south-west Somalia. But a severe drought from five poor rainy seasons left them staring at empty grain stores and dusty fields littered with carcasses of livestock, once their source of meat and milk. “We haven’t been able to harvest enough grain to feed ourselves for the past two years,” says Jamilla.

The blazing sun and dry heat make life very difficult for farmers and pastoral nomads living in northeastern Kenya’s arid Garissa county.
