Water and food security are inextricably linked. WFP responds to water-related disasters and supports communities to build resilience.
Water quality and quantity, whether too much or too little affect food production accessibility, availability and utilisation. Over 70 percent of the world's food-insecure people live in water-stressed areas where water availability is severely constrained. Most of the rest live in areas where water is abundant, but quality and access are often compromised.
This publication outlines the issues related to water and food security as well as WFP's commitments to water security and principles that guide WFP's water management activities.
