IR-EMOP Providing critical support to populations affected by the ongoing crisis in CAR and its regional impact in Cameroon, Chad, DRC and RoC

Between 8-15 May, the escalation of violence in several localities of Haute- Kotto and Mbomou prefectures, including deadly clashes, attacks against Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), civilians from specific communities and humanitarian actors have caused massive displacements and increased humanitarian needs.

In Alindao, according to NGO sources, 14,000 people have been displaced and are in need of humanitarian assistance. In Bangassou, clashes have forced up to 7,200 people to seek shelter in the hospital, the church and the mosque. Hundreds people from the nearby Nzacko town have reportedly been forced to flee into the bush. According to UNHCR, some 2,500 people also crossed the border to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Overall, it is estimated that 25,000 people affected by the crisis in Bangassou require assistance. 

According to latest estimates, some 39,000 people, mostly women and children are in need of humanitarian assistance. This include up to 14,000 people in Alindao and 25,000 people in Bangassou.

This new wave of violence struck areas that had been spared from major incident in the past years and are not covered by the current EMOP. WFP is rapidly scaling up its intervention to respond to new needs. With this IR-EMOP, running from Mid-May to Mid-August, WFP will assist up to 14,000 people in Alindao and 25,000 people in Bangassou with a 3-day high energy biscuit relief ration. As food stocks arrive, WFP will distribute a 30-day-dry food ration covering 100% of nutrition needs.
