Emergency Food Assistance To Vulnerable Populations Affected By Floods in Malawi

Following heavy and continuous stormy rains since the beginning of January, Malawi has been experiencing devastating floods which have affected over 275,000 people; more than 30 percent higher than the worst case scenario contingency planning figure. Based on current weather forecasting models, the rains are expected to continue in the coming days and weeks exacerbating the already dire situation. According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS), the heavy rains are due to a tropical depression (very deep low pressure area) located in Quelimane in Mozambique and the enhanced rain bearingsystems (the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) and Congo Air Mass which have remained active over Malawi. Other southern African countries of Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe have also been affected. The President of Malawi declared a state of national disaster in the affected districts on 13th January, 2015.
