WFP welcomes Republic of Korea's commitment to global action against hunger

SEOUL/ROME - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a timely contribution of US$10 million from the Republic of Korea (ROK), which will enable WFP to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable families in Kenya and Ghana. ROK has also pledged to increase its annual rice contribution to WFP from 100,000 metric tonnes in 2024 to 150,000 metric tonnes next year, which helped over 7 million most in need in 11 countries this year.

The pledge was made by the ROK as a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which was launched at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. WFP values the ROK for its unwavering partnership and continued trust in WFP to advance our collaborative efforts towards ending hunger and poverty.

"We are grateful to the Republic of Korea for its support in responding to unrelenting humanitarian needs around the world," said Cindy McCain, WFP Executive Director. "The government’s generous support will strengthen our ability to respond swiftly to urgent needs, reflecting our shared commitment to a future free from hunger for all."

With ROK’s contribution of US$5 million to Kenya, WFP will help 158,100 people mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect their livelihoods by enhancing the food security and climate resilience of smallholder farmers, livestock holders, and marginalized groups, including women and young people, living in fragile, climate and conflict-affected settings.

This initiative in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) of Kenya integrates anticipatory climate action, ecosystem restoration, and gender-inclusive economic opportunities to build resilience, aligned with the KOICA-WFP programme, 'Building Climate Resilience for Food Security in the Fragile Setting of the Horn of Africa' launched this year.

ROK’s contribution to Ghana worth US$5 million will provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to the drought-affected people in northern Ghana. The contribution will allow WFP to provide cash transfers to almost 187,000 Ghanaians, helping them meet their basic food and nutrition needs. This donation comes at a critical time when food prices are at a record high, exacerbated by large-scale crop and livestock losses due to lack of rain affecting significant farming areas in northern Ghana.

This contribution will help eradicate hunger, reduce poverty, and create sustainable, climate-resilient food systems in the region, building on ROK's continued commitment to global food security.
