WFP at COP29: Unite to protect vulnerable communities on the frontlines of climate change

ROME – As the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) convenes in Baku, Azerbaijan, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) underscores the critical role of climate change as a driver of hunger and calls on global leaders to prioritize urgent action for communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

At COP29, WFP is calling for:

  • Accelerated climate action and financing in fragile and conflict-affected contexts where communities are most vulnerable and least equipped to adapt.
  • Immediate action to operationalize the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, delivering crucial resources to frontline communities facing climate-driven hunger and malnutrition.
  • Urgent transformation of food systems, especially in fragile and conflict-affected contexts, to become less carbon-intensive, more resource-efficient and more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
