Republic of Korea helps WFP rebuild people's lives in northern Mozambique
The funding, which was provided through Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is part of KOICA’s Conflict and Fragility Programme and will help WFP support the reintegration of more than 50,000 returnees, especially women and youth, with essential food assistance and income-generation opportunities. The contribution will also be used to restore local ecosystems and strengthen community resilience to extreme climatic events in Cabo Delgado province over the next three years.
“For years, KOICA has provided support to northern Mozambique in the areas of resilience building, reducing gender-based violence, improving public health and education system, and now, with this additional Conflict and Fragility Programme, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to the stabilization effort of the Mozambican government in Cabo Delgado area,” says Ms. Jinjoo Hyun, KOICA Mozambique’s Country Director. “We are happy to extend our partnership with WFP for our Conflict and Fragility Programme, who we trust for its strong operational capacity.”
Since 2017, violence has resulted in mass displacement of people, casualties, and the decimation of livelihoods. While half a million people have since returned to their homes, some 850,000 people remain displaced.
“Thanks to this significant contribution from KOICA, we will empower communities that have endured considerable hardship in recent years to become more self-reliant,” says Antonella D'Aprile, WFP's Country Director in Mozambique. “We extend our deepest appreciation to the Republic of Korea for their support in preventing future risks and fostering a sustainable and peaceful environment for all.”
The Republic of Korea is a long-standing partner of WFP in Mozambique. Since 2020, Korea has contributed more than US$ 5,9 million to support building the long-term resilience of people in Mozambique. KOICA’s Conflict and Fragility Programme was established to address the root causes of fragility.
